There are three types of gold – White gold, Rose gold, and the more common Yellow Gold. The purity of gold is expressed in karats. 24k Gold is 99.9% pure gold and is far too soft to be practical for rings. 18k gold is 75% pure gold and is generally considered the highest purity practical for rings.
Although a gold ring may lose its brilliant shine after long years of use, it can always be polished by any jeweler to bring back its original shine and luster.
Mixing gold with other metals is how the different colors of gold are created. White Gold is formed by alloying gold with platinum or nickel, and rose gold is obtained with a combination of gold and copper. The most popular among these however for a men's gold ring, is the yellow gold, which is alloyed with silver and makes for the most expensive rings.

I have an olive complexion, and I find that yellow gold is more flattering to my skin tone than white gold or platinum. However, when shopping for an engagement ring, I'm finding that high-end stores carry mostly platinum & white gold and don't carry many yellow gold rings.
Is there a reason to NOT get a yellow gold engagement ring, besides taste? Like-- is yellow gold significantly less durable?
